What had started as an interest began to show signs of repeatability. Results became more predictable. Techniques improved.

It was no longer just about producing alcohol. It was about producing something worth keeping. Alongside that came a simple realisation: the Falklands had no spirit of their own, but maybe they could. What was being made here, however modestly, might be the beginning of it.

Yet there was still no obvious route forward: no scale, no infrastructure, no established market, just a process that was gradually improving, and a sense that it might be capable of more.

When support was sought, it was not forthcoming, but that did not stop it.

John Hellowell became involved as a director and shareholder, helping to shape the transition from a personal pursuit into a viable business. The third director, Saul Pitaluga, is a Falklander born and bred or dyed in the wool, as they say here. Where Taff arrived and stayed, Saul has never been anything else. For a spirit that sets out to be the islands’ own, that matters.

So the three entrepreneurs did it anyway, their way. And it worked!

From that point, Tumbledown Distillery began to take shape as a business. Still small. Still limited by location, but now with direction. What had started in a pantry and a garage was becoming something capable of standing on its own.
